A days ride from hell – or in hell – or something like that! June 12 or Day 55

We got up early, were on the road early, but the heat had already beat us…holy heat wave batman!  We passed through Mobile, Al, and Pensacola, Fl – so – 3 states in one day.

We knew there would be traffic, so we decided to take a non-interstate route by Elgin Air Force Base, home of the Blue Angels Air demonstration team.  Once we were many hours down this secondary highway (#20) it became apparent that there were little to no services along the route.  We kept thinking we’d find something, but in town after town there was nothing.  I’ve never seen that before.  Rae was absolutely melting in the heat, and I wasn’t doing much better.

We finally stopped to get a drink and a bite to eat and after a bit of a discussion on what to do, we ended up heading back to the interstate just to find a place to stay in Quincy, FL.  We wanted to stay out of Tallahassee if possible, and Quincy gave us that opportunity…plus, the smaller towns offer better pricing for rooms.  We did finally arrive and even managed to be off the road before 4.

I went in to register and Rae started tearing down the bikes – she’s gotten really efficient at it.  Once we threw our stuff into our room, we went straight into the pool.  I can’t even begin to tell you how amazing that water felt after the searing heat of the day. The rest of the night was spent lounging.

Rae booked a hotel near the Crystal River basin for the next two days…so we can go swim with the manatees!  How freakin’ cool is that?
