Fort Bragg, CA…Day 14 otherwise knows as May 2

We left Eureka knowing that we were going to have a short day which was good as both of us were still sore from yesterday.  Those severely bumpy roads will do that to you!  We had a smooth ride down Hwy 101, deciding to stop at a little roadside shop that was all about the’ Legend of Bigfoot’ and wood carvings.  Might seem like a weird combination, but it worked…really it was a pretty cool place.  We literally had not even got off our motorcycles when this wonderful man, his wife and their two friends came quickly over to us, taking our picture.  We immediately knew (by his accent) that he was a tourist enjoying the sights the US had to offer, just like us.  Turned out that they were from Israel.  They were really excited about our bikes and couldn’t believe that Rae was riding her own bike.  It was funny to see them realize that Rae was a girl when she took off her helmet.  As soon as Rae had her helmet off, the one gentleman with the camera showed his surprise and took her picture!  LOL.  Of course, I couldn’t blame him, she does look pretty good on her bike!  We gave them the link to our blog and chatted for a bit before they headed off towards Napa, CA.  Once back on the highway we came upon a CHP Cruiser trolling the highway and he made the ride so un-fun.  The roads were screaming for us to burn them up, but there was none of that with this guy setting the pace.  Fortunately for us, Pacific Coast Highway #1 came up and we took the chance to get away from the traffic.  What a road.  It twisted, turned, up and down hills, with all types of corners and perfect pavement for MILES!  It was much longer than the Dragon, much more technical, and challenging and get this, MORE corners…yes these are the roads no one talks about!  Like the Dragon though if you make a mistake you will pay a dear price…not a place to have a get off!  Rae rode extremely well scrubbing her tires out to the edge with no difficulty, but clearly not in her element.  I was struggling with traction issues with a heavy bike, tons of gear, and knobby tires.  It made for extremely interesting cornering!  The offset was the cool howl they would make under braking after a few miles of being tortured by me!  Yes, I had a blast, and wish I had a more street oriented tire…soon, yes very soon.  Another thing that was cool is that we were riding in lush greenery, then suddenly we found ourselves riding along the coast.  It was tough to concentrate on the road with such breathtaking scenery, it really was what I needed to stir my soul.  We stopped in Fort Bragg around 1300 hrs, and that was it for our ride, both of us anxious to get off the road.  We decided to stay at the Quality Inn which is nothing to write home about but it’s clean.  We went for our proverbial walk about town, and had a late lunch at the North Coast Brewery (Fort Bragg’s local micro-brewery), which had character but much more formal than the Lost Coast..  We walked to the Skunk Train, yes a real train with a skunk on the side, checked out the little local museum and then made our way back to our room (avoiding a crack-head picking imaginary bugs off his arms).  We were going to have a hot tub until we went into the pool area and saw a diaper laden kid frolicking in the hot tub…yup, nothing like chocolate floaters in the hot tub…let’s just say we passed on hot tubbing.
